The discovery ofTomenthypnum falcifolium(Ren. ex Nich.) Tuom. in Canada is rather recent. For a long time, it was considered as a variety ofTomenthypnum nitens. Some characters allowing the distinction of the two species are discussed and illustrated. Distribution maps of both species in the Queacute;becndash;Labrador Peninsula are presented. Habitat conditions ofTomenthypnum falcifoliumin the Laurentides Park are derived from a study of peatland vegetation. It grows mainly in extremely poor fens, the dominant peatland type of this region. It is a hummock-preferring species and never forms extensive colonies. Its ecological amplitude is then rather different from that ofTomenthypnum nitenswhich is more commonly found in rich fens.
