The next generation of IP networking has security as one of the requirements, but no one knows when IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6, also known as IPng) will be aproved, nor when a majority of backbone implementation will be achieved. However, firewall and other IP vendors are currently using these standards propoed to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to solve interoperability for heterogeneous virtual private networks. For businesses running corporate WANS down to telecommuters using PCs, it will ensure secure communication over the Internet or other untrusted networks.
