Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system that is characterised by discrete areas of demyelination and axon injury associated with inflammatory activity. One of the key defining features of MS is that the lesions are disseminated in both space and time; that is, they occur at more than one site and develop on more than one occasion. The aim of this article is to give an overview of MS the disease, symptoms that may present, and the controversies regarding diagnosis and potential mis-diagnosis.
