In his article on S Class locomotives which was published in Observer 302, starting on page 107, A P (Percy) Godber mentioned "For some reason the side tanks were cut back not long after their introduction, reducing their capacity to 850 gallons and the total weight of the engine from 37? to 35 tons, with a consequent loss of adhesive power". Not having seen a picture of an S with this modification, I assumed that this would have produced a locomotive looking something like the familiar short-tank R Class. How wrong I was!
