Even though the elevator industry is modernizing motor generators as fast as the customer base will allow, the number of generators still in service in some of the older cities may comprise the bulk of the service work/preventive maintenance being performed. This presents a unique problem for the companies with service contracts on these systems. Many of these generators have an inherent flaw in their design that limits their ability to operate at different load requirements without eating brushes and spewing harmful carbon dust into the air. The excessive carbon dust creates a problem for all involved: the building owner or facilities manager, the mechanic and, most of all, the company with the service contracts. The service contractor has the responsibility to maintain the facility and, of course, attempt to make a profit. Anyone who has ever entered a machine room with a carbon dust problem understands exactly how significant an issue it creates.
