Friction stir welding has been successfully applied to the production of wide aluminium alloy panels. Wide floor panels of alloy 6N01 for the superexpress Series 700 Shinkansen are produced by friction stir welding with a butt joint construction for both canceling influence of heat affected zone (HAZ) and minimizing a gap. Also friction stir welded wide shape panels of alloy 5083 are used for the cabin wall of a ship. Moreover, a large curved shape of brazed-honeycomb-sandwich-panel is produced by friction stir welding with a butt joint of square shapes.
