GlaxoSmithKline's new Fine Chemicals Facility at Port Fairy, Victoria combines a complex chemical process with fine process sensitivities. GLAXOSMITHKLINE (GSK) is a worldwide pharmaceutical manufacturing company, with a number of manufacturing sites producing product. Within this large organisation is a relatively small unique manufacturing plant, located at Port Fairy in Victoria. The plant produces the active ingredients for painkilling drugs by extracting morphine and related opiate alkaloids from milled poppy straw, and then processing the alkaloids into other value added pharmaceutical active compounds.
