In 1997, Nearly two-thirds of flexible packaging converters expected the majority of their production to be multi-web structures in the next five years. Fueling growth may be the notion that implementing multi-web often means combining familiar substrates and processes. "It's pretty common to put printing and laminating together," remarks Mike Van Abel, business team leader at International Paper's Thilmany Division. "Aside from the capital required to get the equipment, there aren't a lot of technical hurdles to multi-web." To make a mark in multi-web, printers need quality supporting equipment, such as laminators and slitters, and a level of RD resources common to larger companies, says Toby Jensen, VP marketing at PAC One, Dunwoody, GA.
