AbstractExperiments have been carried out on structural materials to investigate the effect of pre‐straining on the rupture strength. The effect of sodium chloride on aluminium and stainless steel and that of ammonium hydroxide on brass and copper has been analysed. It hat been found that the rupture strength decreases with increasing pre‐strain. A stress corrosion index has been defined and this index has been found to depend on the initial pre‐strain; a linear relation exists with the percentage of pre
