Headline-grabbing incidents, looming regulations, and a philosophical shift to greater self-policing by operators have increased demands on the operators running Pipeline Integrity Management (PIM) Programs. Methods for capturing, analyzing and reporting information are evolving at lightening speed as operators are leapfrogging from paper-based systems to the implementation of geographic information systems accessed through Web-based interfaces. While operators readily appreciate the benefits of a geo-spatial system of tying together information, time is of the essence with the advent of the Office of Pipeline Safety's new initiatives.
