1. The effect of 0.5percnt; ethanol on the oxygen consumption of cercbellar cortex, cerebral cortex and liver homogenates was studied. The basal oxygen consumption of untreated anterior and posterior cerebellar vermis was also recorded.2. Determinations of oxygen consumption were carried out by the use of a newly developed technique using hemoglobin as oxygen donor and as an indicator of oxygen tension.3. Ethanol reduced the oxygen consumption in anterior cerebellar vermis homogenates, but created no significant changes in posterior vermis homogenates. No significant changes were recorded in cerebral cortex and liver homogenates.4. Untreated anterior cerebellar homogenates had significantly lower oxygen consumption compared with posterior cerebellar homogenates.
