Every now and then, a pipeline project comes along that challenges even the most seasoned of professionals. Such is the 430-mile Yucatan Peninsula Pipeline being built by Energia Mayakan—a partnership made up of TransCanada, InterGen, (a joint venture of Shell International and Bechtel Enterprises) and Mexico's Gutsa Construcciones. When completed next month the pipeline will have the distinction of being the first privatized project of its type and magnitude in Mexico and the sole system built to date without the ownership of state owned oil giant Petroleo Mexicanos (Pemex). It is also the first pipeline built under the auspices of the Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE), Mexico's national electric utility.
