Over forty years have passed since the first Sumitomo Light Metal Technical Reports was issued in January, 1960. We are now going to publish the 40th anniversary report which will summarize the results of our research and developments over these past 10 years and we want to submit the report as a reference for the persons concerned.Even though total annual demand for wrought - rolled and extruded - aluminium products in Japan has leveled off at around 2.4 million tons per year in these 10 years after the collapse of the so-called bubble economy, the demand for our main aluminium products such as can body and end stock, high purity aluminium foil for electrolytic capacitors, fin stock for air conditioners and material for heat exchangers in automobile has remarkably increased in the same period. On the other hand, the total annual production of copper products in Japan has increased to about 1.1 million tons per year in these 10 years which is 1.2 times more than that of the preceding decade. In particular, the production of copper tubes used for air conditioners that are closely related to our products has increased dramatically in these 10 years.
