In the future, to economically deliver faster and faster residential broadband access speeds, it will become necessary to make two significant changes to the network. Firstly, optical fibre must push closer to the customer - ultimately to the home, as is now already happening in some countries, for example Japan. Secondly, it will be necessary to simplify the entire network, including core, backhaul and access. The concept of long reach optical access PONs, that are being proposed within BT's research programme, would achieve both these goals. This article summarises research within BT on the design of long reach access PON systems.
