FAIR will be an extremely sophisticated complex, designed to provide high-energy, precisely tailored beams of antiprotons and many kinds of ions. These charged particle beams will be accelerated and used to create new exotic particles in a range of experimental programmes. The facility will be used for both basic and applied science and it is hoped to gain insights into some of the fundamental questions about the universe's evolution, the origin and the abundance of the elements, and into how fundamental interactions and forces keep elementary particles together. To do this, FAIR's experimental facility run by GSI will offer higher energies and higher intensities than before. Sophisticated advanced detector technology combined with powerful data processing is needed to gather and interpret the experimental data from a large number of different experiments.
