In the Deisswil mill of Mayr-Melnhof Karton, Deisswil, Switzerland, online charge control at board machine KM 6 achieved substantial cost savings. Resin/alum additions were reduced by 33 and dosages of grease barrier products by 25 . Favourably, mass starch additions have become superfluous and the spray starch requirement is now restricted to isolated cases. The improved filler retention resulting from charge control has enabled a 2 g/m~2 reduction in the fibre content of the top layer. Apart from a 150 mg/l decrease in COD levels in the outflow from the board machine, the machine runnability has been optimized. This is reflected in shorter adaptation times after grade changes and in distinctly reduced broke volumes and depositions. Overall, the machine capacity has increased by over 1 per cent. In short, online charge analysis has paid off within a period of less than three months.
