The present study examined non-bedridden survival in 105 patients diagnosed as demented (Alzheimer’s disease, multi-infarct dementia, mixed dementia) in a neurological ward. Follow-up observations were made. During the first year, the cumulative mortality rate was 69 compared to a rate of 44 in the second year. The initial disability stage, as assessed by the Dementia Disability Scale, was found to be the only significant predictor of non-bedridden survival.
