Used motor oils are products of environmental concern as they contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and high levels of heavy metals. A method using charge transfer chromatography for the preconcentration of PAH in used oil and their subsequent separation on a special C18 bonded silica gel is described in this paper. The method is applied to the measurement of PAH in semi-synthetic and mineral lubricating oils used in gasoline and diesel motors.
