Noise measurements form the basis for ambient noise evaluations by the Federal German Noise Regulation, serving to prevent significant annoyances and unreasonable noise effects. In order to make intelligent decisions about noise impacts, there must be an appropriate measurement strategy to facilitate an analysis of sufficient quality. The noise sources must be systematically separated to distinguish the investigated noise components from other environmental influences. Correlation analysis, distribution analysis, statistical noise separation, and other frequently-used statistical methods are based on the contents of the guideline VDI 3723. The quality of noise control decisions can be systematically defined using a statistically based understanding of noise measurements.
