摘要

Just as his name indicates, among Chinese scientists Prof. Ye Duzheng is an epitome of whole-hearted devotion to science and moral integrity in personal character. As one of the founders and pacesetters of Chinese atmospheric science, Prof. Ye was conferred with the highest prize of the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) in its 48~(th) session Conference on May 27, 2003. The event was not only a special honor for all Chinese meteorologists, but also a world-wide recognition of his fruitful career. Prof. Ye was born in Tianjin in 1916. His father had served as a prefectural functionary of the former Qing Dynasty, and attached special importance to the ethical education of his offspring by edifying them with the traditional values. So Mr. Ye's childhood was permeated with the thick aroma of traditional culture. In classical Chinese, the character "du" implies faithfulness, devotion and profundity, while that of "zheng" means integrity, decency and uprightness. From the father's naming of his son, we might speculate or imagine the high hopes that old man had for the boy's future. He was not to be disappointed: his son's life has been both fruitful and brilliant, and has more than lived up to the great expectations embodied in such deep parental love.
