Nurse leaders have issued a fresh warning that patient care is unsafe on wards where there is just one registered nurse to every eight patients. Safe and Sound - the Safe Staffing Alliance, made up of senior expert nurses brought together by Nursing Standard, said the 1:8 figure is based on hard evidence and claimed that breaches occur about 40 per cent of the time in hospitals in England. The alliance is recommending that 'under no circumstances' should staffing levels be allowed to fall to below 1:8 during the daytime.
