Giovanni Marletta was horn in Augusta, Italy, in 1953. He is Full Professor of Physical chemistry at University of Catania, Italy. Educated in chemistry with a curriculum in physical chemistry, he concluded the chemistry studies magna cum laude at University of Catania. He was a Research Fellow from 1980-1984, then Assistant Professor (1984-1992) in the same university. He moved to University of Calabria (Cosenza) as Associate Professor (1992-1994) and then was appointed as Full Professor at University of Basilicata (Potenza) (1994-1996). He came back to University of Catania in 1996, where he is currently President of the graduation course in materials science (since 1996) and Director of the Laboratory for Surfaces and Interfaces of Consorzio Catania Ricerche (a consortium of universities and industrial companies) (since 1992).The research interests of Prof Marletta have involved a number of related fields covering topics from the radiation-solid interactions to surface engineering of materials with particle beams to the area of physical chemistry of surfaces. Specific skills include ion beam induced modification of polymers; study of thin films; and surface spectroscopic techniques, including XPS, REELS, SIMS, SERS, etc. A significant part of this activity has been devoted to applications to the fields of surfaces and interfaces for microelectronics, including the study of the sputtering-induced phenomena in solid surfaces, the formation of polymer-metal and polymer-ceramics interfaces. In recent years the activity has been enlarged to encompass the study of molecular surfaces and 'soft nano-technologies', including topics ranging from the study of molecule-surface interaction in condensed phase to the strategies to obtain monomolecular films and discrete assemblies of biological molecules and systems, including aminoacids, propteins, DNA segments, liposomes and cells.
