NA;Although striking differences exist between scintiphotographs of inflamed joints and of normal joints, the appearance of normal joints usually is not completely homogeneous. Slight increases in dot density are seen over major blood vessels and over synovial surfaces. We have described the positions which we believe best for examination of each peripheral joint and have demonstrated the normal structures that may be seen over and about each joint. The possible physiologic mechanisms of visualization of these structures are discussed Since this technique is potentially useful for diagnosis in patients with equivocal arthritis, accurate interpretation of minor scintiphotographic inhomogeneities may be important. With awareness of the normal structures that may be visualized, possible diagnostic errors may be avoided. Further, the visualization of normal joints and major blood vessels by scintiphotegraphy may be useful in investigative problems involving these structures.
