Paint manufacturers are making tremendous efforts to lower the HAP contents of their coatings, and in part this is in response to industry's constant nagging for HAP-free coatings. During a coffee break at a recent conference I spoke to themanager of a research laboratory who asked me a seemingly simple question; "When is a coating HAP-free?" The answer seemed to be equally simple, namely that HAP-free means just that. Zero HAP. Nada! But then my colleague pointed out that some resinscontain small amounts of HAP solvents, and when incorporated into a full-bodied coating formulation their concentration is truly "small."
