Two experiments were undertaken to evaluate the legibility of dials. The results of both experiments showed that one factor was extremely important for correct and quick reading : that the major graduations (the 10s and 5s) on the one hand and the dial + minor graduations on the other should be in a relationship of figure and ground. The special case of omitting minor graduations from the scale is also examined.
