A new inorganic ion exchanger, zirconium phosphoborate (Zr:P:B = 1:1:1), has been synthesized by mixing a 0.1M zirconium oxychloride solution with a hot mixture of 0.1M boric acid and 0.1M phosphoric acid solutions in the ratio 2:1:1. The pH of the mixture was adjusted to zero. This procedure gave a reproducible ion exchanger. It is fairly stable in water, dilute solutions of acids, base, salt solutions and non-aqueous solvents such as methanol, DMSO and DMF. A tentative structure of this compound is proposed on the basis of chemical analysis, pH titrations, TGA and IR studies. Ion 'distribution studies of 22 metal ions have been made on this exchanger and on the basis of these studies four binary separations of lanthanide ions (Sm3+- Er3+, Pr3+- Er3+, Th4+- Er3+and Y3+- Er3+) have been achieved on these columns.
