The scintiangiographic technique can be a significant aid in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary thromboembolic disease. It adds nothing in the way of time or difficulty to the study, the cost is trivial, and taken together with standard perfusion and ventilation studies, the scintiangiographic technique increases the diagnostic usefulness of the lung scan for pulmonary thromboembolic disease. It adds to the other modalities information which may prove relevant to modification of therapy and to prognosis and can yield significant information about the heart, pericardium, and great vessels related or unrelated to the diagnosis of PTE.
