The American Heart Association, the highly respected health voluntary funded largely by public donations, is being accused of blackmail and of confusing consumers about healthy eating through a program designed to swell its coffers and augment its own power. Industry is siding with government efforts to kill the HeartGuide program. AHA's heart seems to be in the right place and the purposes of its program are laudable. What's gone wrong? Can the benefits to consumers be salvaged and the dangers to them avoided?
