A new species ofHirsutella,H.pichilinguensis, on lepidopteran larvae collected in rain forest in Ecuador, is described. The new taxon is characterized by synnemata bearing phialides with a verruculose neck and by 0- to 1-septate conidia. In addition, a dominant synanamorph is present, which produces large, narrowly clavate, distoseptate, hyaline, thick-walled phragmos-pores. The taxonomic position of this distinctive synanamorph is obscure, although similarities in form and function can be drawn with the entomogenous hyphomycete generaDesmidiosporaThaxter andTetracriumHennings.
