Limonene is a naturally occurring cyclic monoterpene that is found in a wide variety of edible plants. Prior observations have shown limonene to possess chemopreventive and anticancer properties that may relate to limonene's capacity to inhibit protein isoprenylation. Regulation of terpene biosynthetic pathways has become a focal point for the pharmacological control of hypercholesterolemia. We combined the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, lovastatin, with oral limonene in a pilot study of combined prenylation inhibitor therapy for human cancer. Objective clinical responses were observed.
