The Numerical Calculation of Viscous Stratified Flows

The calculation of steady low Reynolds number flows with strong stable thermal stratification is analysed. It is shown how the behaviour of an iterative method depends on the Rayleigh number. Time dependent calculations are also considered, and an apparently new time step limitation is derived. It is shown that the iterative method is more efficient than the time dependent calculation as a means of finding the steady state.
