With the landmark year 2000 quickly approaching, many municipalities are struggling to meet waste-diversion mandates. One tool increasingly under consideration by communities is commingling of residential recyclables into one or several streams. While some see this as a way to increase recovery and collection efficiency, others point out the processing and marketing challenges that often accompany resulting materials. Now, at least two newsprint manufacturers are creating allies on both sides of this issue by accepting commingled fibers as furnish for their recycled-content newsprint.
