IP connection services through mobile phones are growing rapidly in popularity in Japan. The number of subscribers for the NTT DoCoMo-provided IP connection service, "i-mode service", has also been increasing since the service began in February 1999, and there were more than 37 million users of i-mode service in March 2003. With the growth in subscribers, the traffic carried by the Personal Digital Cellular-Packet (PDC-P) communication network that provides the i-mode service is increasing rapidly. To provide stable service and to handle high traffic loads in these circumstances, it is necessary either to increase the capacity of the switching systems in the network or to replace them with more powerful ones in a timely manner. This requires an accurate evaluation of the switching systems' processing performance.
