Abstract1,1,3,3‐Tetramethylguanidine was found to be a more effective catalyst than triethylamine or 1,1,3,3‐tetramethyl‐1,4‐butanediamine and poorer than diazobicyclooctane for the reaction of phenyl isocyanate with 2‐ethylhexanol. Similar catalysis was found for the phenyl isocyanate‐water reaction. It is postulated that the actual catalyst is the reaction product between 1,1,3,3‐tetramethylguanidine and phenyl isocyanate, 1‐phenyl‐3‐bis(N,N‐dimethy
