Saxifraga rufidula, variously classified as a species or as a variety or subspecies ofS. occidentalis, has been studied in detail through meiosis, development of the female gametophyte, and seed production. Throughout the process it resembles closely the same process previously described forSaxifraga integrifolia. However, it lacks several unusual features ofS. integrifolia.S. rufidulahas 10 pairs of chromosomes, a fact which raises the question of its relationship toS. occidentalis(19 pairs of chromosomes) and to other, geographically distinct, 10-paired species.
