Since 1970, when the ecological impact of organotin-based antifouling paints on marine biota became evident, the negative effects of such biocides have been studied with increasing intensity. Among these the best documented are shell thickening in oysters and a decline in recruitment of their juvenile stages (Alzieu, 1991), and the phenomenon of imposex in marine prosobranch snails.
