Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is currently considered the psychological treatment of choice for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). The evidence base for CBT in BDD is, however, small compared with other disorders, such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) or major depressive disorder (MDD).There are two randomized, controlled trials that compare CBT with a waiting list in BDD. The two randomized controlled trials of CBT for BDD indicated that CBT is better than no treatment in BDD. CBT in these studies consisted of developing a good psychological understanding of what was maintaining the problem and thentesting out the theory by behavioral experiments, exposure, and response prevention. The principles of these approaches are outlined below.
