AbstractThin coats of flame‐retardant paints are unable to protect flammable substrates as there is not sufficient flame retardant in the thin coat to protect the substrate. Intumescent coatings foam and bubble when subjected to high temperatures and create multicellular cushions which prevent (a) heat from penetrating into the substrate and (b) flames from spreading along the surface. This paper concentrates on paints and varnishes, but also considers protective coatings for structural steel, smoke proof and wall piercing
