Waste heat recovery for modern VLCCs

Waste heat recovery systems have been with us for some time but their use has declined due to the increased thermal efficiencies of the modern two-stroke engine. Some of the early systems, such as BP and Greens, worked well and were used on product tankers right down to 19 000dwt and proved invaluable in providing the ships electrical requirement by means of a low maintenance and extremely reliable turbo-alternator.
