AbstractSeven chronic schizophrenic patients, stable for over 12 months on maintenance fluphenazine decanoate, were administered 40 g of alcohol orally soon after their regular injection. Blood samples for estimation of serum neuroleptic and prolactin levels were collected at various intervals over a 12 h period. The procedure was repeated at their next regular injection but without alcohol. It was found that alcohol ingestion produced a significant drop in both serum neuroleptic and prolactin levels which persisted during the study period.
