A collective groan must have emerged from IT departments across England last month when the BBC announced that it was to stream all the matches it showed live on television to computers simultaneously via its website. Inevitably, warnings soon followed of network meltdown as office workers across the nation unable to get home in time for kick-off logged on from their desks. Businesses were entitled to be sceptical about the positive spin that a BBC spokesman tried to put on its football service: "We know a lot of online viewing is done in the office, so we suspect this will allow people both to do their job and to keep up with the very latest action from Germany."
