The effect of time of weaning of Merino lambs on to different types of pasture in a tussock grassland environment was investigated. In 1963 significant differences in growth rates in favour of lambs weaned at 15#x2013;16 weeks compared with lambs weaned at 11#x2013;12 weeks were evident up to three months following weaning. In 1964 the reverse was true. However, nine months later differences were small and non-significant. Hence, under these conditions, if considerations of stock management demand it. lambs can be weaned at 11#x2013;12 weeks of age without detriment to their subsequent growth.
