As super dyes and super drugs, quantum dots could herald a new era in the battle against cancer. IN THE NOT-SO-DISTANT future, doctors could detect cancers using tiny engineered particles that emit light These nanoparticles, called quantum dots (qdots), can be designed to find and latch onto the biochemical markers of cancer, helping diagnostics and aiding surgery Although qdots are not yet approved for use in people, their potential has biomedical researchers racing to adapt them to current techniques, develop new techniques to take advantage of their unique abilities, and study their safety for eventual use in people.
