As a palliative care chaplain, I work daily with patients and families struggling with end-of-life issues. New technologies and life-saving measures now make it possible to live longer, healthier lives. But as I make daily rounds, I often wonder just how far Americans live in denial about their mortality. We do our best to push the mere thought into the farthest recesses of our mental closet of anxieties. Then when illness or disability do force us to seek treatment, we are ill-equipped mentally, emotionally and spiritually to deal with the idea that we are not designed to live forever.
