Analysis of surge phenomena in the Humber estuary, North-Sea coast of eastern England

Time series of hourly environmental parameters for the Humber estuary are presented here. Generally higher surges are found in the Humber estuary during winter and autumn. Surges during the period of investigation ranged from about 1 to 1.8 m in amplitude. The variations of the corresponding meteorological parameters were also coincided with the occurrence of high surges. Most of the time the maximum surge height occurred after the occurrence of minimum pressure or coincide with the occurrence of minimum pressure and maximum winds. Maximum surge height also occurred with the decrease of air temperature. Linear relationship between the Hull K G surges and other meteorological parameters are established. In winter the correlation coefficients between the surges and other meteorological parameters became stronger as the season proceeded. The relations are stronger in winter than in summer. Linear correlation analysis has also been observed between suspended particulate matter (SPM) and environmental parameters.
