New Aciand coal mine suffers legal setback

The Queensland Land Court has recommended that the state government rejects Australian producer New Hope's plan to expand its New Aciand thermal coal mine to 7.5mn t/yr from 4.8mn t/yr, potentially forcing the mine to close next year.The court recommended today that the Queensland mining minister Anthony Lynham should reject the mining lease and environmental approvals for the mine. Lynhamcould ignore this recommendation but this would be unusual.
