Diminished Perfusion to an Entire Lung Due to Mucus Plug

A dyspneic patient with Guillian-Barreacute; syndrome underwent a perfusion lung scan and was found to have diminished perfusion to an entire lung. Twenty-four hours later, after vigorous pulmonary toilet to remove lung secretions, perfusion was almost normal. The rapid resolution of the perfusion defect makes it most likely that the cause of the abnormality was a mucus plug.
