The spatial distribution of lead in indoor firing ranges

Air and dust sampling was carried out at five indoor firing ranges (A, B, C, D and E), while 0.22 calibre rifle shooting was in progress. A total of 90 static samples and 14 deposition samples were taken and the results are reported in this paper. The results of 15 personal samples has been reported earlier. Most of the samples contained concentrations of lead which could result in exposed persons exceeding the recommended occupational exposures. Two ranges were sampled with the ventilation systems turned on for half the occasions and off for the other half. There was little difference in the lead‐in‐air concentrations on these occasions, indicating that the ventilation systems alone were unable to achieve satisfactory air quality. These results are discussed with reference to a previous study which investigated the reduction of lead pollution when jacketted ammunition was used.
