Research shows that older women are more likely to be abused than older men. Yet surveys such as the recent prevalence study of abuse in the UK show clearly that men are also subject to abuse. Little attention has been paid to this area of elder abuse, and this book, which is a reprint of a collection of articles from thn. Journal of Elder Abuse and Neglect, is an attempt to remedy that. Drawn mainly from the general literature, the chapters show that 'the problem is often invisible, under studied and under treated'. Most of the evidence comes from the United States and all but one of the authors is from this country. There is one exception, and in this case the chapter by Jacki Pritchard is based on empirical research in social services departments in the north of England. Some chapters seem to bear little relationship to the wider topic, for example that on osteoporosis, while others are very small scale, such as the 26 cases in American nursing homes.
