A model based on a new derivation of the equations derived by Amundson and by Bohart and Adams to describe flow in carbon filter beds is presented. A scaling argument is used to explain the discarding of the local time derivative of effluent concentration and it is rigorously shown that the Bohart and Adams model is a special case of the model derived by Amundson. The theoretical results are supported by experimental data for carbon filter beds of different depths under various flow conditions. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd. References: 11
